Technology makes things easier and more accessible which has led to us having a sedentary way of living. We now move less because tasks such as getting food and buying things can easily be done with one tap of a finger. As an effect, we go out less often and don’t get enough sunlight. People are exposed to light that mimics that of natural sources such as the sun. Light therapy, however, is not just a matter of merely standing or sitting under artificial light or wearing a mask with lights. There are certain instances and conditions for light therapy to be effective and efficient.
To begin with, your light box or device must emit a minimum intensity of 2,500 lux. Lamps emitting 10,000 lux would be better because this figure is advised by clinicians. It is 20 times stronger than the usual indoor lighting. With 2,500 lux, you have to get more exposure and your sessions lasts longer. Sessions for light therapy using 10,000 lux are comparably shorter. It is best to ask advice from experts or clinicians before getting into light therapy to make the most out of it.
The goal of light therapy is to mimic natural light. While having that amount emitted, it must also block ultraviolet rays. Too much of that becomes harmful to the body.
When using a light box, make sure that it does not directly hit your eyes. Your eyes can only handle so much light that letting your artificial light face you directly may cause eye strains and headaches. Keep your lamps at a certain angle, preferably around 2 o’clock to 10 o’clock. Also, keep it 2 feet away from your eyes.
Consistency is key to get the best results. One to two sessions is definitely not enough and the benefits may last for only a period of time. It is best to be consistent with your sessions for the benefits to keep coming.
